Who you will be talking to
The number on this site connects you with an independent tree service in your area, or with a company that books appointments for tree services. They decide what to send and when, and they set the price. This site does neither. How this site is paid
What they will ask
The call is about sending the right people with the right equipment. A crew with a climber and a chipper is a different visit from one with a crane, and a tree on a power line is a call for the utility first. Have these answers ready:
- Where the tree is and what is near it. Front yard, back yard, on the line, by the street; and what it would hit or has hit: the house, a garage, a fence, a car, wires.
- What happened. Standing, leaning more than before, split, a limb hanging, or already down. If it is down, whether it is still attached to its roots.
- How big. A rough height compared with the house, and how thick the trunk is at chest height. A guess is fine.
- How to reach it. Whether a truck can get close, or the tree is behind the house, behind a fence or a narrow gate.
- Insurance. Whether a claim is open, and the claim number.
- Who decides. Whether you own the property or rent it. At a rented home the landlord usually decides on tree work.
What to have done first
- Everyone out from under the tree, and the utility called if any wire is involved.
- Photographs, taken before anything moves. The Texas Department of Insurance asks for them “before you move the tree, make repairs, or take other steps to prevent more damage.”
- Nothing cut. The International Society of Arboriculture warns that “trees and limbs under tension may react unexpectedly when cut or moved.”
About the price
Tree work is priced after someone has seen the tree, because height, condition, what is underneath and access all change the job. National ranges are on the cost page, so you know roughly what to expect before anyone arrives. What removal costs
